XIX · An Arcana of the Court

The Sun

There are days when the joy of play is enough.

Arcana

A group of young figures runs beneath a giant golden sun-like ball, carrying a net among sunflowers with perforated racket faces at their centres.
A group runs beneath an enormous sun-like padel ball, carrying a net among racket-faced sunflowers. An illustrated leaf from The Book of Twenty-Two Doors.

The ball comes cleanly off a racket. Your partner laughs at a strange bounce, and you are still laughing when the next point begins. For a while, the pleasure of being on this padel court fills the hour.

The Sun's card is crowded with shared motion. A vast golden ball shines above young figures running with a net like a canopy. Sunflowers with perforated racket faces surround them. There is no single champion raised above the group and no defeated opponent placed at the edge of their joy.

Confidence at its most generous makes room for other people. A fine rally belongs to everyone who made it; your partner's delight adds to your own. You can enjoy playing well and let the hour count before asking what you should improve. The laughter after that bounce may have no lesson attached.

This card can arrive after a match you lost. The result matters, and so does the pleasure that survived it. In the Sun's Light, something good can be acknowledged while it is here.

In Shadow, warmth becomes a demand. Only being the best will make the day bright, or a struggling partner must smile so that your enjoyment can stay undisturbed. Joy loses its generosity when someone else has to perform it.

The match is over. You remember the rally, the company and the laughter. There was light here.
